Ours Fitzroy
Ours Fitzroy was created to be short term accomodation that felt like a home, styled with work by local artists, designers and furniture makers. Opened as a one bedroom apartment on top of a shopfront on Johnston Street, the idea quickly evolved into gallery and retail space as well.
Creating the fit out involved initial aesthetic renovations and interior adjustments including painting the staircase, creating a custom outdoor courtyard table, installing a repurposed church window as a shower-screen, and other interventions.
Some of the amazing local creatives featured in the space included:
Monde, Billy Furniture, Fools Glass, Emajane Fisher, Shannen Johnstone, Kathleen Prentice, Nathan Markham, Amiee Byrne, Modern Times, York Objects, Candice Perese, Sam Chirnside, Gervais Netherway, Katie Ford, Suku, Mud, Naru Kubota, Kitt Bennett, Joshua Space, Taylah Saunders, Alex Earl, Chong Office, and many more.
Ours Fitzroy was described by SUKU Home as ‘a home for Melbourne’s creative spirit,’ which was fitting for the warm and affectionate response the space received from Melbourne’s local arts community.
The quick success of the space meant the project soon evolved beyond the original intention and took on a life of its own.
After little over a year, and countless collaborations, events, pop-ups and productions, the space was closed and transitioned into the Ours it is now. And will forever live-on as an exercise that offered many insights and limitless possibilities.
